Former Packer talks leadership, teamwork at Boy Scouts fundraiser

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — A former Green Bay Packer makes a stop in La Crosse for a good cause Wednesday night.
Bill Curry — who played for the Packers under Vince Lombardi in 1965 and 1966 — was the featured speaker at the Gateway Area Council Boy Scouts’ annual Golden Eagle fundraising dinner.
Before Curry went on to win championships as both a player and coach, he was a member of the Boy Scouts as a young boy.
He says the Scouts helped him learn lessons in leadership and respect, which translated into success on the football field and life.
“When you come together as a unit, there’s a synthesis and a cohesion so that you perform better than the apparent sum of your component parts,” said Curry. “So you watch a little team, or you watch a little scout unit and you say, gee, those kids are performing better than they are. That’s right, they are. Why? Because they respect eachother.”
Curry says even though he only played for the Packers for two years, he still has a soft spot in his heart for the team, which made it hard to see them go up against his hometown Atlanta Falcons in the playoffs.
Curry also played for Baltimore Colts, Houston Oilers and Los Angeles Rams during his 10-year NFL career. He then went on to serve as the head coach at Georgia Tech, Alabama and Kentucky, leading Alabama to an SEC championship in 1989.
