Frank Hrdina

Frank J 2

Frank Hrdina, age 85, died on Thursday, April 29, 2021, at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, IA.
Frank Hrdina was born on September 25, 1935, to Frank and Anna (Lukca) Hrdina in Decorah, Iowa. He attended rural country school in Winneshiek County and graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1953.

Frank married Joyce Meyer on June 6, 1964, at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin, IA. Frank was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was a proud farmer, working the land that his father and grandfather owned since 1886. Frank milked cows on the small family farm his entire life until retiring in 2001. He flew the American flag at the end of his driveway, starting the tradition in the early 1970s and continuing until his death. Riding trains to visit relatives in Chicago turned into a life passion of catching train sightings and of Lionel model trains. Proud of his Czech heritage, he never missed the community band during Protivin Czech Days. Frank appreciated the beauty of sunsets from the farm’s driveway. He delighted in his bird feeders both on the farm and at Accura Healthcare, where he spent the last years of his life. He was excited any time a new bird made an appearance. He was quick to make new friends and new connections. Frank reminisced fondly of the close endearing relationships of family and friends, and the wonderful experiences shared, from parties on the farm to everyday moments.
Frank is survived by 4 children Judi (Mark) Goodell of Iowa City, IA, Shari Hrdina of Des Moines, IA, Jerry (Haru-chan) Hrdina of Chigasaki City, Japan, and Kat Hrdina of Austin, TX; 5 grandchildren Kayla (Tyson) Goodell Jones of West Richland, WA, Claire and Noel Guderjahn of Des Moines, IA, Lynn and Kai Hrdina of Chigasaki City; and 1 great grandson Titus Jones of West Richland, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Anna Hrdina and his brother Donald Hrdina.

Private family burial will was planned for Monday.
