Future of La Crosse’s Green Island Ice Arena uncertain after tornado

The Green Island Ice Arena in La Crosse took heavy damage and now the city is deciding whether it will ever reopen.  The building lost a large portion of it’s wall.

All of the interior garage doors were sucked in because of wind and there is a bend in one of the walls that could be affecting the entire structure.

The insurance company and structural engineers will arrive Wednesday to look at the building and they’ll decide whether they will repair the structure or knock it down.  “It all depends on what the structural engineers will say, of course anything can be fixed it all boils down to what the price of the fix will be as compared to replacing it,” says Park Supervisor Gar Amundson.

The building hosts youth hockey, curling and roller hockey activities.  They have all been suspended until further notice.
