Gillette Street potential bike lane survives Common Council resolution vote

Renovations along one busy La Crosse road will move forward with a potential bike lane.

The La Crosse Common Council Thursday night voted against a resolution that would have banned the proposed bike lane along Gillette Street.

The lane will be part of the road’s reconstruction, but some businesses and residents voiced concerns about the difficulties a bike lane could create.

“The folks that voted to move forward with the Board of Public Works sees the removal of one side of parking and putting in bike lanes as a way to help slow traffic down and make the area more safe. We heard from Council member Neumeister and Council member Olson, they are concerned still about safety in that the bike lane could make that worse,” said La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat.

The Common Council also voted that night to put off repairs for the Riverside Park fountain. Proposed bids for the repairs would have put the project over budget.
