Golf ball-sized hail hits central, east Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Fast-moving storms have swept across central and eastern Minnesota, dropping golf ball-sized hail and stopping the Minnesota Twins game against Detroit for just over an hour.

The National Weather Service has a report of 2.5-inch hail in St. Louis Park Tuesday evening. Large hail also is reported east of Mille Lacs, west of Elk River and in north Minneapolis.

Northwest of Minneapolis, a possible funnel cloud was reported over St. Michael about 8 p.m. Wright County sheriff’s Sgt. Troy Wachter (WAHK’-tur) says a house had the roof of its garage lifted off and a fence was knocked down at another house, but no one was hurt.

With rain pouring from the darkened sky over Target Field in downtown Minneapolis, the Tigers-Twins game was halted at 8:17 p.m. as fans scurried for shelter.

The game resumed just over an hour later.
