Golf course apologizes for 9/11 promotion

Tumbledown Trails offered discounted golfing to 'commemorate' 9/11 attacks

MIDDLETON, WI — A golf course is apologizing for its promotion that would have given customers a steep discount on golf on the anniversary of 9/11.

The golf course, Tumbledown Trails, offered nine holes for $9.11 and 18 holes for $19.11 to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The coupon could be found in an area newspaper and was featured on a media blog before going somewhat viral.

Several people commented about the company’s advertisement, saying it was unpatriotic or disgraceful. Others came to the company’s defense.

The company issued this apology on Facebook Monday:

“We would first like to apologize to everyone that we have upset or feels we have disrespected in any way. By no means did we mean to do this. Here is what we will do this Wednesday 9-11; we will still let all that have tee times booked play for the previous rates we posted. Then for all other golf that day we would like to donate the dollar difference between our normal rate and the previous price for the day to the 9/11 Memorial. We hope that everyone will now see this as a positive as we really meant it to be. Again we do sincerely apologize for offending anyone and hope that you do accept our sincere apology.”

Later Monday night the company issued two more posts, saying it is a family-owned business that gives 20 percent off to police, fire, emergency and military members every day.

The company also said it may now be closed on 9/11 because golf course workers are worried what people will say or do to the staff.
