Governor Walker’s Opioid Taskforce meets at UW-La Crosse
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — A drug abuse task force is looking to get funding for treatment and recovery initiatives in Wisconsin’s next state budget.
Governor Scott Walker’s Task Force on Opioid Abuse met Friday on the campus of UW-La Crosse.
The meeting was led by task force co-chairs Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, and Representative John Nygren, and also included La Crosse representative Jill Billings.
She says lawmakers have been successful in reducing the amount of opioids in the community and now need to make sure treatment is available for those who want to get clean.
“We really need to focus on prevention and recovery, and make sure people understand that this is a disease. Addiction is a disease, and we need to look at it with compassion and understanding,” said Rep. Billings.
Governor Walker’s next budget is due by February.
The task force hopes their findings lead to more funding for recovery programs across the state.
