Guest rooms, in-law suites on the rise

As baby boomer parents are retiring, some are opting to move in with their children. This is changing the architecture of homes as children make room for mom and dad.

According to Realtor.org and the American Institute of Architects, dedicated guest rooms and in-law suites are rising in popularity. According to the AIA, in 2014, 39 percent of architects surveyed said they were seeing a rise in demand for in-law suites. An in-law suite can include a second master bedroom with a bathroom or a separate living quarters, like an apartment, within the home, according to Realtor.org.

In 2012, the AIA said just 10 percent of architects surveyed reported homeowners requesting in-law suites.
