High hopes, uncertain expectations for Aquinas Baseball

Wisconsin high school baseball starts playing games this week, and Aquinas has a tall task heading into its opener.

Their best hitter and future Minnesota Gopher Jared Everson got plenty of swings last summer with a traveling club team, but the rest of the roster didn’t see as much tough competition, and doesn’t have much varsity time, either.

So a day away from the start of official games, the Blugolds aren’t sure what they’ve got.

“It was nice that the WIAA gave us 15 contact days, so we’ve been going for quite a while now through contact days, and last week was pitching and catching,” head coach Scott Bagniefski said. “We are untested. Being away a year from the game, I don’t know right now, and that’s the fun part of this. We have to enjoy the process of this.”

“As a team I think we’re ready,” Everson said. “I think we’re still building. Obviously, it’s still early, but I feel especially with this year’s team we have a chance to do some damage.”

Aquinas opens the season Tuesday at Woodside Complex against Wisconsin Dells. In 2019, the Blugolds won 16 games.
