How to keep pet food safe
Pets, just like humans, are at risk of Salmonella poisoning. To keep your pet safe it’s important to know how to protect your pet against Salmonella, and what signs to look for to see if he or she might be infected.
According to the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, dogs with Salmonella will show similar symptoms as humans, including vomiting and diarrhea. Dogs might also become lethargic. Dogs can suffer from dehydration, so it’s important to seek veterinarian care if you suspect your pet has Salmonella.
The AKCCHF says dogs can contract Salmonella from eating contaminated food, raw meat, eggs, garbage or dead animals. To keep pet food safe, the FDA recently launched a study to examine samples of pet food and nutritional supplements for Salmonella.
If properly treated, the AKCCHF says most dogs will recover from Salmonella poisoning.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, humans should also be careful when handling pet food in case it is contaminated. The AVMA recommends pet owners wash their hands thoroughly before and after handling pet food and treats. Adults should also supervise children when they are around pet food.
