WINDSOR, Wis. — A Dane County deputy shot and killed a person at a hotel in Windsor Thursday night, officials said.

The shooting happened around 6:10 p.m. at the Super 8 hotel on Lake Circle after the deputy made contact with a vehicle, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said the deputy was involved in a “critical incident that led to them discharging their firearm” and hitting a person. That person was taken to a hospital where they died.

No law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting.

Neither Barrett nor the justice department elaborated on what led the deputy to pull the trigger.

The Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
