Indians’ Leonys Martin fighting life-threatening infection
Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin is hospitalized with a bacterial infection that the team is describing as “life-threatening.”
Martin, who was acquired by the team from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline, is in stable condition at the Cleveland Clinic, team president Chris Antonetti said when he addressed the team before their game against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, according to The Associated Press and ESPN.
Doctors diagnosed Martin with a serious bacterial infection that spread to his bloodstream and created toxins that damaged his internal organs.

“Thankfully he’s made a lot of progress in the last 24 to 36 hours and he has regained a lot of the organ function, “Antonetti said. “He’s in a good path right now and we’re hopeful he’ll make a full recovery. But, he has a long way to go.”
Martin last played last Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins, but was hospitalized after falling sick overnight, the team said.
He was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday. He was hitting for a .333 average with two home runs and four RBIs in six games since the Indians traded for him.
Antonetti said Martin’s outlook is improving, but that “progress will be measured in weeks, not days.”
