Iowa baker denies wedding cake to same-sex couple

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple says it’s her right to refuse their business and that she isn’t discriminating against the women.

According to KCCI-TV, Trina Vodraska and Janelle Sievers say they were shocked that Victoria Childress refused to bake a cake for their June wedding. They say it was degrading.

Childress, who runs her own business from home, says she explained to Vodraska and Sievers last week that she is Christian and because of her convictions couldn’t bake their cake.

Childress says she did not belittle Vodraska and Sievers.

Other Des Moines area bakers are coming to the couple’s defense, saying it shouldn’t be a gay or straight issue and that the business is about people, not one’s lifestyle.
