Iowa City grants protesters a permit for park

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa City has granted a permit to anti-Wall Street protesters to continue camping in a downtown park.

The city on Wednesday granted a four-month permit to Occupy Iowa City for College Green Park. The permit is dated Oct. 26 to Feb. 29 and includes restrictions that address health, safety and park access issues. Conditions include a portable toilet shall be available and tents designed for sleeping six or less are allowed. Solar panels are OK, but artificial lighting can’t be used between 10:30 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Protesters have been at the park since Oct. 7 but the protest didn’t need a permit because of an exception for “spontaneous events.”
