Iowa City shelter wins grant to help homeless vets

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A homeless shelter in Iowa City has won a $105,000 federal grant to provide job training services to homeless veterans.

U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack announced Monday that Shelter House won the competitive grant from a U.S. Department of Labor program and will use it to serve homeless veterans in Johnson County.

Loebsack plans to visit the shelter Tuesday to discuss the grant, which he says will provide veterans with the support they need to get back on their feet and bring their skills to Iowa employers.

Loebsack’s office says the grant will help Shelter House offer occupational, classroom and on-the-job training for veterans. Shelter House will also help veterans search for jobs and find them placements.
