Iowa collects $6M in criminal, civil actions
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Federal prosecutors say the Northern District of Iowa collected nearly $6 million in criminal and civil actions during the most recent fiscal year.
U.S. Attorney Stephanie Rose said Thursday that of that amount, more than $4 million was collected in criminal actions and another $1.8 collected in civil actions. Additionally, the office collected nearly $2.4 million in criminal and civil forfeitures.
The U.S. attorneys’ offices are responsible for enforcing and collecting civil and criminal debts owed to the U.S. and criminal debts owed to federal crime victims.
The Department of Justice says it collected over $6.5 billion in debts nationwide in fiscal 2011. It was the second consecutive year the amount surpassed $6 billion.
