Iowa group seeking money for Civil War memorial
HAMPTON, IA (AP) — A group is seeking matching donations to pay for repairs to a Civil War memorial in the northern Iowa city of Hampton.
The Mason City Globe Gazette reports the Hampton Historic Preservation Commission is seeking $32,000 in donations to match a grant it recently received.
The money will pay for exterior masonry restoration and other work on the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall, located on the east side of the Franklin County Courthouse. The structure was built in 1890, making it the first G.A.R. Memorial Hall build in Iowa dedicated solely in honor of Civil War veterans.
The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
