JJ Watt donates $10K to help family of fallen firefighter
J.J. Watt has stepped up to help the family of a Wisconsin firefighter killed in an explosion Tuesday.
The Houston Texans defensive end and former Wisconsin Badger star player donated $10,000 to a GoFundMe effort benefiting the family of Sun Prairie Fire Department Capt. Cory Barr, according to a report by The Associated Press.
Barr was killed in an explosion in downtown Sun Prairie caused by a natural gas leak. He leaves behind a wife and 3-year-old twin daughters.
The AP reported that Kate Cichy, a spokeswoman for GoFundMe, revealed Watt’s donation in a news release Wednesday night.
Watt, a Waukesha, Wisconsin, native, received the 2017 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award for his efforts raising money for Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
The effort had raised nearly $160,000 as of Friday morning, more than doubling its initial $75,000 goal.
