K-9 renamed to honor late Madison police sergeant

Sgt. Krahn honored by law enforcement after losing battle with cancer

Madison police announced Tuesday a K-9 will be renamed to honor late Madison Police Sgt. Karen Krahn.

The name of officer Jim Donnell’s K-9 partner Kona has been officially changed to Krahnie, according to the release. Krahnie was Karen Krahn’s nickname used by her coworkers, friends and family.

Krahn was honored by her law enforcement brothers and sisters at her May funeral after losing a battle with cancer.

K-9 Krahnie had no K-9 training when Donnell began working with her several months ago, police said. Krahnie is the first nationally certified police K-9 that was fully trained by the Madison Police Department K-9 program.

K-9 Krahnie is fully certified as a dual-purpose police K-9, and has her own trading card, MPD K-9 team leader Sgt. Chris Boyd said in the release.
