Keeping a lookout for turtles crossing the road

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – There are 11 turtle species that are native to Wisconsin, and for most of them slow and steady wins the race.

This might not be the same for you, but it’s something to think about while driving this time a year.

Female turtles are searching for nesting spots on higher ground and some baby turtles are hatching and making their way to the water.

You’ll often see them while driving near marshes, wetlands, and rivers, which the Coulee Region has a lot of.

And if they’re on the road, they might need your help to make it safely to the other side.

“Be mindful of where you’re driving, keeping your eyes on the road, and if you do see a turtle, slow down. If it’s safe you can stop and help that turtle cross the street,” said Justin Holten, Naturalist Member, WisCorps.

If you do help a turtle cross the road make sure you’re moving them in the direction they’re going.

Remember, these turtles may be carrying eggs, so be gentle and keep them in a level position when moving them.

If you see a turtle in the wild, keep your distance and don’t disturb it, and never interact with a snapping turtle.
