La Crosse and Onalaska recognized for recycling efforts

La Crosse County is catching the attention of the Wisconsin DNR for its recycling efforts.

The DNR chose La Crosse and Onalaska as two of the most improved recycling programs in Wisconsin.

The two were chosen out of 1,000 different recycling programs throughout the state.

At Harter’s Quick Clean Up, recycling rates increased by more than 1-hundred-30 percent in the past year.         

The county’s director of solid waste credit the change to the areas new recycling bins.

“When we filled our 18 gallon container, often times we would the extra recyclables and throw them in our trash. When we got the new cart system, that had a much larger capacity, people were more than doubling the amount of materials,” said Henry Koch.

The city of Middleton and the Village of Paddock Lake were also recognized for their recycling efforts.
