La Crosse City Council approves amended raise for mayor’s position

The La Crosse City Council moved ahead Thursday night with increasing the salary for the mayor’s position.

The vote comes after Mayor Tim Kabat vetoed the council’s effort to increase the mayor’s salary back in August.

They wanted to increase it nearly 10%, from $77,000 to $85,000, which some council members said would put it more in line with the average salaries for mayors of similar-sized cities in Wisconsin.

Now, the council is looking to compromise with a $79,000 salary.

“I don’t know if my position has changed since we talked about this the last couple of months, so I have time to consider what my next step,” said Mayor Kabat.

The council also introduced a proposal to increase the salary of City Clerk Teri Lehrke.
