La Crosse Co. one of few in state to have emergency command bus
LA CROSSE, WI — La Crosse County is one of just a few in the state to have a communications and command vehicle ready to dispatch.
The bus provides a central point for all emergency personnel to communicate while at the scene of a large event or disaster.
La Crosse County’s emergency management coordinator says it’s a great asset to have even though major disasters are rare in the area. “Responders have access to a pretty robust system, but it’s nice to be able to bring some of that to a scene too so you’re not relying upon radio towers that are a distance away. We can communicate directly to our command post, it just makes sense to have stuff at the scene,” said Keith Butler.
The bus used to be a mobile medical clinic for Mayo Clinic Health System.
