La Crosse County accepting gay marriage license applications

5-day waiting period to receive license

La Crosse County is now accepting same-sex marriage license applications, County Clerk Ginny Dankmeyer announced Monday morning.

Per State Statutes, there will be a mandatory five day waiting period to receive the license.

“Before we had nine couples come in to apply, but they were never issued, because the stay was put in place before we could actually issue them after the five day waiting period. So because it’s been more than 30 days, their licenses have all expired, so anybody that did apply previously will have to come in and start the process over again,” said Dankmeyer.

Both individuals are required to bring several documentations:

certified copies of birth certificates
divorce decrees that have a judge’s signature if a divorce was involved the past marriage or certified death certificates
photo ID – must be valid and not expired
proof of residency
social security numbers
date of intended marriage
$90 cash only
name and contact information for the officiant

Dankmeyer is expecting fewer than a dozen applications to come in this week, including those who tried to get a license back in June.
