La Crosse expert: Family meals are nearly as valuable as therapy

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- We all do it. Eat in front of the TV or while scrolling on our phones. Health experts suggest you break that habit.

Mayo Clinic Health System therapist, Janice Shreier, says sitting down with family for a meal does wonders for your health and can have similar benefits to therapy. “Family involvement is hugely important for treating depression and anxiety. And when families are eating together and having family meals, that’s kinda taking away my job, that’s family therapy,” explains Shreier.

Shreier also believes shared, home-cooked meals are also great for reducing your risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.
