La Crosse Family YMCA hosts ‘Wednesday Work Nights’ at the Food Forest
Teaching the community about gardening
LA CROSSE, Wisc. (WKBT) — The La Crosse Area Family YMCA is providing fresh produce to residents while teaching the community about gardening.
The Community Food Forest is self-sustaining, and produces organic foods free of pesticides. The garden also provides access to healthy foods for those in need and teaches the community how to produce and prepare their own meals through classes.
Organizers hope the forest serves as a blueprint for individuals to create their own gardens, fueled by classes at the Y called ‘Wednesday Work Nights’.
La Crosse Area Family YMCA Nutrition Education Coordinator, Stephanie Shaw says, “Every time that we have one of these events on those Wednesday nights, it’s from 6 to 7:30 pm, people are welcome to come for as little as they want, or as long as they want..”
YMCA staff says The Community Food Forest is really growing this year, and all the plants are flowering, and they will have fruit soon.
