La Crosse Fire Department offering free smoke alarm installation

Current homeowners unable to afford proper smoke alarms are getting some help.

The La Crosse Fire Department is offering free smoke alarms and installation through a program with the Wisconsin Smoke Alarm Fire Education Coalition and the American Red Cross.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, 3 out of 5 deaths related to residential fires were in homes without smoke alarms.

The Fire Department says ensuring everyone has a working smoke alarm is essential to building a safer community.

“Most fires occur at night when people are sleeping. With having a working smoke detector, it’ll notify you early in the fire to buy you valuable time to get out safely,” said Lt. Steven Cash, of the La Crosse Fire Department.

If are unable to afford a smoke alarm but would like one, you can schedule an appointment with the Fire Department by calling (608)789-7260.
