La Crosse Fire Department offers fireworks safety reminders

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The La Crosse Fire Department is reminding people of fireworks safety regulations ahead of the holiday weekend.

Any fireworks that explode or leave the ground are illegal without a permit in La Crosse and statewide.

Anyone who uses fireworks illegally can receive a citation.

Fireworks that are allowed without a permit include sparklers, toy snakes and smoke bombs.

Community risk management leaders say there are more than 10,000 emergency room visits every year in the U.S. as a result of injuries related to fireworks around the 4th of July.

“And we have dozens of these cases every year within the city of the La Crosse as well,” community risk management coordinator Pat Corran said. “So it really just comes down to a health and safety thing. Just recommending residents within the city. Make smart choices over the 4th. And leave the fireworks that go boom or explode or leave the ground. Leave them to the professionals.”

Corran says if your children uses legal fireworks, they should be watched by a parent or guardian.
