La Crosse Fire Department offers free smoke alarms
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The destructive blaze at the India Curry House in downtown La Crosse was one of two fires in the city in just the past week.
The La Crosse Fire Department offers free smoke alarms and will install them in your home for free.
The program is only for homeowners, said Pat Corran, the city’s community risk educator.
Renters need to contact their owners. State law requires landlords to install smoke alarms in rental units.
Officials say 60 percent of fatal house fires nationwide take place in a home without a working alarm.
“We just really want to get as many into the community as we can,” Corran said. “We know that they work. It’s a great program. We feel that it helps keep homes safer. It helps keep people safer.”
If you would like a free smoke alarm installed, can contact the fire department or the Red Cross.
