La Crosse Fire Department responds to struck gas line

The La Crosse Fire Department responded to a struck gas line call at 9:17 a.m. Tuesday.

According to Battalion Chief Jeff Schott, the La Crosse Water Department struck a gas line near the 800 block of Liberty Street. Crews were on-scene within six minutes and the line was clamped within 10 minutes.

The fire department evacuated homes on the west side and remaining buildings were ordered to shelter in place.

The leak was secured. There was no fire or explosion, Chief Schott said.
