La Crosse Maid-Rite closing its doors

A long-time staple on La Crosse’s north side is closing its doors.

Maid-Rite on Caledonia Street is shutting down at the end of Tuesday after nearly 70 years of serving its famous sandwiches on the north side.

The original Maid-Rite was opened in 1947 before being bought by its current owner in 1988 and reopening in 1990.

The restaurant became a popular place for locals to grab lunch and was known for its distinctive railroad-themed decor.

There are still several Maid-Rite locations open across the Midwest, but the La Crosse location was the last one in Wisconsin.
