La Crosse Mayor Kabat addresses impact of flooding in Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKBT) — La Crosse’s Mayor Tim Kabat was in Washington D.C. Tuesday, as he is discusses the impact of climate change on our area.

Kabat addressed the Senate Democrats’ Special Committee on the Climate Crisis’.

The Committee is holding a hearing on Building Community Resilience in the Face of Extreme Weather from Climate Change.

Kabat talked how flooding concerns are growing and are continuing to impact the community.

“The standards are from an earlier time, we need to be updating those standards, updating those codes so that we are doing a better job of making La Crosse and all the communities around us up and down the river just more resilient and tougher when it comes to those weather events,” said La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat.

Kabat was joined by members of the Council on Foreign Relations, as well as the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin says as flooding concerns grow, the federal government’s response needs to change.

“We have a system at the federal level that typically assists communities to rebuild to pre-disaster standards, that’s got to stop,” said Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin.

Mayor Kabat also addressed the use of temporary levees in La Crosse to help deal with flood waters.
