La Crosse Mayor lends a hand in the school lunch line
Celebrating School Breakfast Week
LA CROSSE, Wis. — Last year, more than 36,000 meals were served in the La Crosse School district through its breakfast program.
To celebrate the role breakfast plays in the lives of school children, special guests like Mayor Tim Kabat are helping serve breakfast to kids at Hamilton Early Learning Center during National School Breakfast Week (March 6-10, 2017).
“When kids come through they get a healthy meal before they start their day,” said Heather Skiles, Assistant Nutrition Manager at Hamilton and SOTA I. “They have a hard time focusing when their tummies are hungry.”
Mayor Kabat helped Skiles behind the lunch counter, offering students things like fruit, breakfast pizza, cereal and banana bread to give Hamilton students the energy they needed to have a successful school day.
“We know how important it is for learning, and really, student achivement,” said Mayor Kabat. “So they get that nourishment and are not worried about when they’re going to eat again, because that has real negative impacts to the classroom.”
The school principal, counselor, and district superintendent are also scheduled to be breakfast servers at Hamilton this week.
