La Crosse movie theater awarded for inclusive hiring practices

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — A movie theater on La Crosse’s south side has been recognized for inclusive hiring practices.

Marcus Cinema-La Crosse received recognition as an Exemplary Employer from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Friday. DWD says when it comes to working with people with disabilities, Marcus Cinema’s General Manager Brian Olson is often referred to as someone who is naturally supportive and is training his staff to create a workplace that is comfortable and allows all employees to be confident in their jobs.

“Wisconsin employers hiring people with disabilities aren’t simply helping someone get a job; they are changing lives,” said DWD Secretary-designee Amy Pechacek, “[They are changing] the lives of those they employ, their family members, and of others in their community who see the work employers are doing and start believing that they can also be a part of something great.”

Gov. Tony Evers proclaimed October “Disability Employment Awareness Month” in Wisconsin to highlight businesses that recruit and hire people with disabilities and encourage other businesses to provide opportunities.

DWD’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation is working with 15,000 individuals around the state who are preparing themselves or ready to join the workforce.
