La Crosse, Onalaska area top list for cleanest air in nation

Area listed in American Lung Association's State of the Air Report

The American Lung Association says the La Crosse-Onalaska area has some of the cleanest air in the nation.

Our area topped the U.S. Cities for Ozone Air Pollution list. Clean air helps calm symptoms for people with asthma or heart disease.

However, the area ranked in the middle of the pack for annual particle pollution. That can lead to lung damage, especially for kids whose lungs are still developing.

Health professionals say we could get even better by driving less.

“Choosing to bike or walk or use public transit or carpool to work, if those are options for people, it would be wonderful to see people choosing those options, because every little bit helps,” said Jennilee Mumm, a physician assistant at Gundersen Health System.
