La Crosse planning unit advances $49.9 million capital improvements budget

Weighing the pro’s and con’s of a city administrator

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — The La Crosse City Plan Commission tweaked the city’s Capital Improvement Program budget during a public hearing Monday.

The 265-page overall plan covers 2023 through 2027, with $49.9 million for 2024, $47.3 million for 2025, $30.2 million in 2026 and $28 million in 2027, for a total of $184.3 million over the five years.

For 2023, the budget is $28.9 million, with new borrowing of $19.1 million and city funding of $24.4 million.

Following are some of the tallies for 2023, as listed in the 44-page summary:

  • Transportation and utilities — $19.3 million
  • Streets — $11.9 million
  • La Crosse Regional Airport — $4.9 million
  • Public safety — $4.9 million
  • Buildings and grounds — $2.1 million
  • Parks, Recreation and Forestry — $1.5 million
  • Utilities — $1.4 million
  • City Hall — $1.13 million
  • Streetscaping and landscaping — $1.1 million
  • Flood Control, Harbors & Waterfront — $800,000

The budget advances to the Common Council for consideration.
