La Crosse police: Attempted light pole theft among 925 Oktoberfest weekend calls
LA CROSSE (WKBT) — The La Crosse Police Department responded to 925 calls for service Oktoberfest weekend, including one in which people tried to steal a light pole.
The department released an overview of its calls for service Thursday after compiling reports from last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Among the reports was a hit-and-run that knocked down a light pole. Police say that after a vehicle hit the pole and fled, wires were exposed and the La Crosse Street Department helped secure the wiring.
“Later in the night, people attempted to take the light pole and the wires were exposed again. An electrician checked the wires again and they confirmed it was no longer a hazard,” the department said.
Police responded to a total of 925 calls from 6 a.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday. That included 140 911 hang-ups.
La Crosse officers issued 106 municipal citations, including 70 underage alcohol consumption tickets, 11 public consumption tickets and 10 public urination tickets.
There were eight people jailed.
Other notable issues included a group of people on Saturday wearing shorts and vests while playing chicken with traffic. They were later found fighting; however, no one wanted to pursue charges.
A pair of bikes were stolen from kids at the Oktoberfest carnival, but they were located and returned to the children.
