La Crosse police rescue suicidal man on Grandad Bluff
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — A negotiator with the La Crosse Police Department’s Emergency Response Team helped a 23-year-old suicidal man walk away from the edge of Grandad Bluff on Saturday night.
La Crosse police responded to Grandad Bluff at about 5:30 p.m. on March 21 for a report of a man standing on the edge of the cliff, threatening to jump. After a brief search, officers made contact withthe man and attampted to talk him away from the edge.
At about 6:30 p.m., LCPD Emergency Response Team Negotiator Lieutenant Avrie Schott arrived on scene and, after several close calls, was able to successfully talk the subject away from the cliff.
The man was transported to the hospital for treatment.
The La Crosse Fire Department and Tri-State Ambulance first responders assisted La Crosse police with the rescue.
All sworn members of the La Crosse Police Department train for events like this incident. The LCPD Emergency Response Team (ERT) includes several highly trained crisis intervention negotiators that work alongside the seventeen tactical members.
