La Crosse rental moratorium expiring soon
City Council accepts report of ideas
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — La Crosse’s rental conversion moratorium is set to expire this month and officials still haven’t taken any action to fix the problem.
The six-month ban on converting single family homes in the city to rental units was put in place back in July. Officials were hoping to use the time to find a permanent solution as the number of rental homes in the city grows beyond 700.
On Tuesday night, the City Council accepted a report from an ad hoc committee. The report does not offer direction for the council, only ideas. They also heard from a number of residents during a public hearing.
“I think if we can stop the conversion of single family homes into rentals, you will improve the quality of life in the city of La Crosse,” said La Crosse resident Linda Lee.
“If they choose to implement the needing a conditional use permit for renting out your property or extending the moratorium, I think that’s wrong, it would infringe on private property rights,” said Kent Gabrielson, President-Elect of the La Crosse Area Realtor’s Association, “if they choose to enforce current laws and do some things like that, I think that’s really good.”
District 12 Council Member Sara Sullivan is working with Mayor Tim Kabat to extend the moratorium another 2-3 months. That will likely be taken up at the full council meeting on Thursday and would include another public hearing.
