La Crosse residents reminded to keep their sidewalks clear following snowstorm

Ordinance requires sidewalks to be shoveled within 24 hours after snow stops

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – If you haven’t cleared snow from your sidewalks following Sunday’s storm, you are at risk of having to pay to have it cleared.

In the City of La Crosse, snow must be cleared within 24 hours of the ending of a snowstorm.

If snow isn’t cleared, crews will be sent to do it for you and you’ll be billed per foot, plus an additional fee.

Even if you have cleared some of your sidewalks, you might want to make sure you have shoveled in line with what the ordinance requires.

“The sidewalk needs to be cleared the full six feet of width. And that’s to allow folks that are in wheelchairs or other individuals to pass each other in an easy manner,” said Doug Kerns with the City of La Crosse engineering department.

As a reminder, free salt and sand mixture is available to people in La Crosse.

You will need to bring your own container so you can get it home.

The mix is available at La Crosse Fire Station four on Gillette Street and Fire Station two on Monitor Street.

It is also available at the Erickson Field off of 21st Place South and the southeast corner of Hood Street and Marco Drive on Isle la Plume.
