La Crosse residents share ideas for Highway 53 corridor redevelopment
Public planning meeting focuses on ideas for transportation, economic development, city identity
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Residents are getting their chance to help design the “Gateway to La Crosse.”
A public meeting was held Thursday night at Northside Elementary, allowing members of the community to hear about the city’s plans to improve the Highway 53 corridor between I-90 and the La Crosse River.
About 80 people packed the school’s cafeteria to give their input on different aspects of a potential plan, including transportation, economic development and city identity.
“We want an experience that’s great for the locals but that also gives people just seeing La Crosse for the first time, or just entering La Crosse for the first time a really good experience and a really good feeling about the city,” said associate city planner Lewis Kuhlman.
City officials say they’ll take the suggestions they gathered Thursday night and research them before trying to add them to their current plans. If you missed Thursday night’s meeting but still want to offer suggestions, you can contact the La Crosse city planning department through their website.
A final plan for the Highway 53 corridor won’t be put together until next summer.
