La Crosse School District takes closer look at establishing charter high school

LA CROSSE, WI — A grant is helping La Crosse school officials take a closer look at establishing a charter high school.

Back in March, the district applied for a $175,000 grant from the state to research adding the school. It was successful.

The district already has three charter middle schools, and test scores are showing success. Students are growing with or better than the national average in reading and math.

The money will specifically support researching if that same success can be achieved in a high school.

“We know in La Crosse that one size doesn’t fit all and providing another option for our students and parents meets board goals, and certainly it’s going to meet the needs of some families and some students who are looking for a different path,” says Troy Harcey, Associate Superintendent of Instruction.

If they go forward with the plan, the school would open to students in 2014. It would use space in Logan High School.
