La Crosse students hold ‘sit-in read-a-thon’ to save library

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — A group of students from Hamilton elementary and the School of Technology and Arts in La Crosse, or SOTA 1, is raising money to keep La Crosse’s South Branch library open.

After hearing the library was possibly closing, SOTA third grader Kaitlyn Erickson, started a “Save the Library” club.

The club is now holding a read-a-thon to raise money to keep the Library open. 

The group held a 3 hour “sit-in read-a-thon” Wednesday at the South Branch library to help raise additional money.

No matter what happens with the library, don’t expect the club to give up anytime soon. They’re already making plans for their next project. “We want to at least have this library open a few more years, but if it gets in jeopardy then I think we should keep doing this club, otherwise we still do this club and make it so we can still have the library open and maybe go to the school district’s libraries,” said Erickson.

The club hopes to raise more than $1,000 from the read-a-thon.
