La Crosse Symphony Orchestra conductor wannabes competition winners announced

Students from Logan and Holmen high schools will conduct a piece at a concert Saturday

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — We now know this year’s winners of the The La Crosse Symphony Orchestra’s conductor wannabes competition.

Five area high school programs took part.

Logan High School in La Crosse and Holmen High School together raised more than $6,000.

That means the conductor wannabes from both of those schools will conduct a piece at a concert Saturday at the Viterbo Fine Arts Center.

“I want to be a high school band director,” Holmen senior Van Maxwell said. “That’s the end goal. And so, I figured going into freshman year of college, having at least a little bit of conducting experience under my belt would be a great idea.”

Together, all five schools raised more than $10,000.

Half of the money raised goes back into the schools’ music departments. The other 50 percent goes to the orchestra.
