La Crosse woman convicted in death of newborn remains free
LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — A La Crosse woman convicted in the death of her newborn daughter remains free despite violating probation six times since 2009.
Twenty-three-year-old Indra Book served six months in jail and four months in a women’s facility after pleading guilty to second-degree reckless homicide.
She was convicted of failing to care for the infant after giving birth alone in a bathroom in 2007. Book put the dead infant in a cooler that was collected with the trash.
An administrative law judge has ruled Book’s latest probation violation of being in a bar and drinking alcohol wasn’t serious enough to send her to prison. The judge instead offered electronic monitoring.
The La Crosse Tribune says last year Book violated probation by using cocaine and synthetic marijuana, attacking a boyfriend and drinking alcohol.
