Local American Legion is making sure no veteran is forgotten
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The Post 52 American Legion is making sure no veteran is forgotten.
Names of area veterans are hanging on the “Buddy Tree.”
People can pick a name off the tree and purchase a gift for them.
The origin of the tree’s name comes from the military term, “Battle Buddies.”
They watch each other’s back, but in this case, are giving back.
“The veterans that don’t have immediate family, they may feel left out, and that’s where the buddy caring system comes into effect. Checking on your buddy or your fellow veteran, to try to prevent suicide or anything like that,” Josh Navrestad, American Legion Post 52 Commander, said.
At least 40 names are on the tree, including homeless veterans.
The Legion is looking for things like gift cards, clothing, and crossword puzzles.
Gifts can be dropped off until December 14th.
