Local athletes shine on Day 1 of Individual State Wrestling

The Coulee Region had a plethora of athletes advance to quarterfinal and semifinal rounds after Day of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament.

In Division 1, Central/Logan’s Cole Fitzpatrick and Dylan Ellefson both reached the quarterfinal rounds before being knocked into the consolation brackets. Holmen saw five of its seven State wrestlers reach the quarterfinals, with Parker and Preston Kratochvil advancing to their respective semifinals.

In Division 2, Mauston/Necedah’s Drake Gosda earned a 1:01 fall to reach the 113-pound quarterfinals Friday morning. G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro’s Jackson Blaken at 126 pounds advanced with a 10-7 regular decision.

Prairie du Chien’s Drew Hird earned a pinfall at the 3:45 mark and will wrestle West Salem/Bangor’s Evan Wolfe Friday morning in the quarterfinals. Hird’s teammate Luke Kramer recorded a pinfall for his 100th win at 145 pounds, and Maddox Cejka at 152 advanced via tech fall. PdC had two wrestlers with Day 1 byes–Blake Thiry  at 195 and Rhett Koenig at 132 pounds.

In Division 3, Royall’s Gunnar Wopat at 120 and Colin McKittrick at 126 each reached the quarterfinals via a major decision and fall, respectively. Calvin Hargrove earned a 13-2 major decision at 160 pounds for Aquinas. Cochrane-Fountain City sophomore Sam Schutz earned a pinfall at 170 over Blair-Taylor’s Jackson Shramek to reach the quarterfinals.

At 182 in Division 3, Riley Klar of Aquinas got a 12-1 major decision, and Ithaca/Weston’s Jacob Manning secured a 3:35 fall to advance. Manning’s teammates Marshell Self at 220 and Caleb Marchwick at 285 both secured pinfalls to join him in the next round.

Whitehall’s Wylie Dunn, Westby’s Dylan Nottestad, Ithaca/Weston’s Jed Scallon, Aquinas’s Jake Fitzpatrick, Tate Flege, Joe Penchi, and David Malin, and De Soto’s Aiden Brosinski all had Day 1 byes due to their top seedings.
