Local boy scout helps build new school garden
LA CRESCENT, Minn. (WKBT) – A La Crescent area boy scout is helping grow opportunities in his community.
Nick Drye, a member of Boy Scout Troop 33 in La Crescent, is working with GROW La Crosse and other organizations to plan and build a new school garden space next to the La Crescent Food Shelf.
Drye is showing his leadership skills in helping his community while working towards the rank of Eagle Scout.
When he found out the school garden had to be moved due to safety concerns, Drye stepped in to help.
“It needed to be done because of the construction of the school, and it’s just a good way to help the community.”
He’s working on building five new raised beds.
The school district owns the La Crescent Food Shelf property and says this new garden provides a safe place to grow and teach, plus there’s potential for future community collaborations.
Grow says this is the first time they’ve worked with the boy scouts.
“This something new to us and we’re really excited to work with such a skilled, young workforce,” said Linda Vale, Operations Manager for GROW.
The group broke ground on Monday evening and says they have received a lot of help from the community to make this project possible.
