Local event is helping the community understand trauma
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Trauma comes in many forms and sometimes it’s hard to understand, but one event is trying to change that.
On Friday Western Technical College hosted Trauma Through a Collaborative Lens: How Healthcare and Social Work Can Address It.
Multiple college and community organizations put on the program.
The goal is to teach the public how to be aware and informed about trauma.
Topics included childhood trauma, human trafficking, and PTSD.
One organizer says awareness is key to help someone struggling with trauma.
“We can treat them with compassion, to understand that the experiences they had throughout their life are leading to them where they’re at right now. We need to meet them where they’re at to help them to continue to grow and overcome these obstacles they’ve had,” said Melissa McCormick, President of the Human Services Club at Western.
She says no matter what we need to treat people as individuals, regardless of their experiences.
This is the 3rd year Western has put on this conference.
