Local health officials react to FDA ban on flavored e-cigarettes

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The FDA plans to ban the sale of fruity flavors in cartridge based e-cigarettes.

The move is considered a compromise between concerns over the rise in teen vaping and the impact a ban would have on small businesses. The ban would also prohibit mint flavored pods.

Some health officials in our area are concerned the ban doesn’t go far enough.

“Youth go for the watermelon and bubble gum and cotton candy flavored,” said Dr. Todd Mahr, a Pediatrician at Gundersen Health System.”They also go for menthol, and unfortunately the President has backed off a little bit on his initial stance of banning all flavors, and he’s going to allow menthol to be marketed.”

The ban would leave only menthol and tobacco flavors on store shelves.
